Well, after a looong day of trying to teach library skills (wow, what are those?!) to 1st through 6th grade students, I wanted to cry! Information Literacy is embedded all over the common core, yet it is not a standard of it’s own. While classroom teachers are in many cases doing a commendable job revising their teaching and aligning their lessons to the CCSS, student’s are finding their library time is being reduced to “book check out.” It’s as though teachers and administrators feel that that is all the librarian has to offer, and quite frankly, all the teachers have time for in the mad pursuit of improving test scores. Yet, spend a little time with academic librarians and they will bring you to tears when they discuss the shocking deficit of today’s college students when it comes to library and information skills. Can we fix this?!!
